A triad of equal approach with diverse means of investigating spaces, instigating aces and anticipating gazes. To initiate, mediate and evaluate for equal measures. At great length, to equally pursue, acquire and exchange knowledge for a sustainable relationship.

1a space is Hong Kong’s first alternative for contemporary art. It is operating as an independent and non-profit making visual art organization founded by a collective of Hong Kong art workers in 1998. 1a space is directed by artists for artists and art practitioners. It is an open platform to cultivate and nurture local artistic talents with aims to promote the critical dissemination of contemporary visual arts practices and affiliated art forms. 1a space aims to constitute a creative interface between the art community and the public.

The funding of 1a space has been assisted by grants and private donations, and is partially supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. 1a space is a registered charity since April 2007.

“Bond, Agent Bond” encapsulates our introduction to the theme given as well as an answer to the open call. Acting as ‘bonding agents’ in a foreign country, it is mandatory to embrace the culture and acknowledge the people. Apart from that, it is also a mission to form a micro-community at the given venue. Nothing can be more beautiful than keeping and bringing people together through art.

What is to be forecasted of the event, to project a brief atmosphere, is a reminiscent of past projects by 1a space in 1999, ‘All you can eat’ and ‘Home Affairs’. Coincidentally, Bond, Agent Bond is a fusion of both – consisting of elements of food, a tea ritual and moments of sharing that will bring the aura of a house setting.

As a collective curatorial approach, our confrontation on the given theme – mobility, is to create a social interstice; an event, a festival or even a potential intervention at the given venue. Its main trait or keyword is ‘relational’ as it involves human interaction and crowd participation. Thus, the objective is not to let the audience pass or walk through the artwork but to socialize, mingle and interact - adhering to the notion of the ‘state of encounter imposed on people’.

Rather than laying an object for the audience to gaze, we will lay a setting or a festive for human sociability. Thus simultaneously hyping up the given theme and treating the venue as a model or vehicle for future possibilities.

We are coming in as a coherent unit but varying in forms; respectively, the outcome will resemble a performance, a ritual and of random materialism. Activities will happen concurrently (on the opening day of exhibition) in an attempt to engage the audience and to create an arena of exchange that is potential for discussion. What is left after, will only be a documentation of the event or the remnants of it. To quote what the ‘given theme’ (by 1a space) manifests:

Mobility, examining the passing of time that allows us to engage in the present as a continuation of the past and the foretaste of the future.

To paraphrase the ‘manifesto’ to our context of mobility, is not to summon the viewers to gaze at an object but rather, to invite the viewers to touch, participate and socialize with the art. Whatever the viewers experience during the event (at present) will bring back memories on cultures and would definitely change their perceptive analysis in the near future.

The omnipresence of signs is representative of a symbolic world we live in. Its infiltration into our daily lives with the usage of text and visuals unknowingly guide us into blind pursuit. The abundance of signs signifies the presence of an authoritative and developed country, one that directs subjects and demarcates spaces.

Challenged by the notion of window displays in shopping malls, vs. the display of art, Tickleart is seen as a transit, bridging the consumerist society and the contemporary art one. To utilize a space void of signs, the audience journeys through this passageway, struck by the contradicting familiarity of the emulated visuals of road signs and the innocuous jumbled text.

We shall show them Our signs in the horizons and in themselves
until it is clear to them it is the truth (Surah Al Fussilat 41:53)

Lilpinkdevil toys with the idea of ‘unseen’ signs that are considered mandatory yet dismissed by society, while Kimberly subtly reconstructs letters to form seemingly cryptic text.

A cyclical approach will be initiated, reflecting a conflict of symbolical traits in the global contemporary society.

A proposed concept written in an email:

Instead of your proposed: Ordinary, I suggest to add
some spice to the text. I would propose it to be:
Ordainary.

To ordain the event, to enact or establish new life
and journey. That would make a nice text as your event
would be a modest and ordinary setting by the beach –
would consider it as an avant-garde one compared to
the conventional Malay wedding.

So, when the above concepts are fused, it would make
an interesting text with multiple meanings –
'ORDAINARY'

The pineapple tart - a favorite pastry laid in the multi-compartment biscuit trays on coffee tables at every possible cultural festival in Singapore. Its origins are unclear – perhaps it’s a recipe passed down generations or is it a typically Malay pastry? It is certainly the ubiquitous festive goodie! To add to this confusion, it was crafted into a performance; a communal pineapple-tart making session with a twist! Each participant had to create an extraordinary tart containing puns. The baking session was another of my pursuit to relational art in engaging the participants to be part of the performance.

Great Things come in Pairs

These two canvases represent you and I; artist and art collector; creator and consumer; art and society. I strongly believe we need two to compare, complement and compromise. One without the other is incomplete. Thus, the paintings are presented in two canvases; great things come in pairs.

The path and cloud-like elements found in the paintings reflect my confrontation with my doubts in everyday life. The paths represent multiple-mapping opinions and decisions that I face, and the clouds express how I'd like to move on and develop my art further, thus inculcating proper meaning and direction in my work. I want to be a cloud; I don't want to be a mountain, because a mountain just sits there beautifully, but clouds keep on moving.

An extension from the installation; I decided to craft a performance. A 'twist' from a conventional flag day –
where it refers to a day when a charity raises funds by collecting in the streets, showing that they have
supported the charity.

Neither coordinated nor being approved by the government, a flag day of my own was initiated and performed.
I gave away the stickers not on monetary terms but in exchange for a group photo-taking session.

I have distributed the email to the 25 friends whom I have converse in the performance of Wear it as you please 2007. To sustain the relationship, the 25 friends need to present me a visual or manipulation to the polaroids which I have sent them. No obligations though as what Stephen Willat, a relational art activist cited on conventions of interpersonal human behavior, “You need a long duration to get their real involvement, you cannot force people and you cannot rush them.” (Nicole Kearton, 2002:12)

15 artworks bounced back. Still cherishing the friendship made and harvesting the knowledge shared between myself and 25 friends, there is a need to create an identity or a form to represent the ‘mini-society’ or should I say to symbolise the community.

The following would be the ideas and visuals
created based on the 15 visuals collated.

A collaboration of thoughts to form an identity of significant.

As all the visual elements and texts are based on ‘bounced’ ideas by 25 friends, it is also a commentary on the Singapore flag. Conceptually, this is an identity of an ideal flag where it is a compilation of shared ideas from the community.

The pristine is never pristine,
Therefore I question the equality of man,
What is the definition of a flag within,
Is it to please a community or the heart of one man?

Apart from being associated with the graffiti jargon, the term throw up invites negative perceptions as an act of disgust, seemingly due to its taboo aspects. Biologically, the process of throwing up, or known as vomiting, is the forceful expulsion of the contents of one’s stomach through the mouth and sometimes the nose. How it is stimulated or coordinated is merely through mediation between the ‘contents’ in the stomach and the brain. Parallel to the context of throw-up; our lab, it is also an expulsion of the possibilities in redefining graffiti. The selected graffiti practitioners will discover, experiment and project out ideological views in an attempt to stretch its possibilities rather than celebrating its glossy aestheticism.

Throw up; Our lab will be a space or facility to deter the audience or viewers from just gawking at the artwork. But rather, it is to provide observations and provoke queries from the progress of experimentation by the selected artists who have reacted or answered to the given theme. Still, it is not a template to be practiced or an answer to be consumed. To borrow an excerpt from Masanobu Fukuoka’s book:

A modern experiment separates nature in small pieces and experiment it.
It resembles neither natural rule nor practical experience.
The result is based more on the convenience of a researcher than a peasant’s needs.
The belief that the conclusion is perfectly used in the field is the big mistake.

The selected artists namely Shieko (Malaysia), Traseone (Singapore) and SprayTwoGeorge (Singapore), respectively, will be toying with the theme given, exploring with movements/gestures and redefining graffiti with a digital touch.

It is quite common when one person vomits, others nearby will become nauseated, particularly when smelling the vomit of others, often to the point of vomiting themselves. Similarly, the intent of this exhibition is to infect the minds of the audience in creating bubbles of questions rather than abruption of full stops.

A graffiti-practitioner since 2003, Malaccan-born Shieko started with stencils and throw-ups before delving into characterization. With two other artists, they formed the art collective Sembur With Style (SWS) in 2004. Now living in Kuala Lumpur, Shieko once worked full-time at an international advertising agency as a visualiser. But she soon grew jaded of the industry, promptly choosing to freelance fulltime in various agencies with her illustration and graphic design skills, thus allowing her to devote equal time to work and her passion. Popularly known for her quirky doodles that transcends through contemporary Malaysia, Shieko garnered 1st place in Panos Street Sign at Lyon City of France, exhibited at Notthatbalai Exhibition, and did graffiti for Malaysia’s 49th Merdeka Mural at the National Art Gallery in Malaysia.

TraseOne has been actively involved in grooming Singapore's young graffiti/street art scene since he started graffiti writing in 1998 and is regarded as one of the leading young artists responsible for pushing boundaries and over-seeing the progression of the local graffiti art movement. Trase’s specialty in handling the spray paint as his primary medium has won him several awards and competitions, including the annual Hip Hop Fest Graffiti Competition in which he won 1st place consecutively since 2003. He has also exhibited numerous works in several international exhibitions, mainly in the United States and Asia. Trase’s art practice continues to pursue his quest in redefining graffiti through performative gestures.

Despite their inaugural showcase in a gallery space, SprayTwoGeorge (STG) who consist of brothers; Tech and Locase have been prolific in showcasing their graffiti oeuvres through local commissioned projects and competitions since 2002. Being undisputedly dubbed as the only ‘graffiti bros’ in Singapore, STG relentlessly stretch their own limits in exploring notions in graffiti art; evident when they bagged 1st place in the Singapore Street Festival Graffiti Competition in 2005. In accordance to STG’s manifesto; they will impassionately develop and experiment possibilities in graffiti, selectively exploiting technological tools as their preferred medium.

Coined by French art critic Nicholas Bourriaud, “Art represents a barter activity that cannot be regulated by any currency or any current substance.” This exhibition titled, Barter, Better, Best was a trade affair; an exchange of artwork with any object anyone can provide. My artwork explores in the redefinition of a product by giving it a new meaning. Apart from nature of its function, I gave them an alternative perceptive analysis; a historical implication.

And what I have gotten? A styrofoam cup with a packet of herbal tea. Let’s trade for art.

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Touted as a leading international newspaper, New York City’s Wall Street Journal is known for its economic liberalism and often neoconservative view of the American foreign policy. Inspired by the influential newspaper, the retaining wall back-facing Sculpture Square was converted from a mundane, restricted and dysfunctional area to one that’s liberated and designated for freedom of expression. Like the fluctuating stocks closely monitored by the newspaper’s readers, the public is allowed to experience and anticipate the evolvement of visuals. Through social interaction between the public and myself, my main objective was to capture the spontaneity within the collaboration, and how we adapted and responded to the evolving visuals in front of us. The footage draws out the activities while simultaneously challenging the notion of surveillance. Instead of scrutinizing the act as an authoritative figure, the viewer watches the art-making process unfold.

I appreciate the particpation from artists and the public. I will cherish the friendships made. Thank you.

You aren’t sure what to do. Your nose inches a little closer to the stack of books, your hands hesitantly reach forward. Your fingertips touch the edge of the tantalizingly smooth spine. As if someone was watching your every move, you become wary. But it feels right and you can’t help but take a peek.

The Lilpinkdevil’s book, a foundation built by various layers of ideas, seeks to spread the philosophies and ideals that he inspired by. As though whispering intimately into your ear, his book warmly shares his views in an engaging dialogue.

The book is injected with a touch of local displacement, pieced by materials accumulated during a recent overseas trip. Articulating his thoughts, ideas and beliefs through the means of the book, it is placed inconspicuously amongst other books, thus blending into a coherent line up. Handpicked personally by the Lilpinkdevil, the chosen books placed along side the artwork complements his ideas and influences his practice as an artist, each book equally important in spurring potential ideas. Socialising through means of collaboration is seen eminently in the book, as he learns and unlearns from the experience; thus dissolving his identity as an artist. The book also takes on a form of experimentation as he strays away from his usual practice in hope of bridging Fine Art and Street Art into one fluid work.
